Everyone knows that dogs are man’s best friend.  As a saying, sometimes those words can ring hollow. Best friend? Just because they hang out and play in the park together?  Well, not exactly.  Sometimes, a dog shows what TRUE friendship really means and why dogs have earned the right to their title.

Bryson Holloway, an 18-month child, is best friends with his dog Shiloh.  Despite Bryson’s young age, the two are constantly playing fetch outside in the family’s backyard.  But in August 2016, instead of hosting a playful game, the backyard posed a danger that no one in the family knew was possible.

As Bryson started making his way outdoors on a hot summer day in Sevierville, TN, a copperhead appeared inches from his body.  While the snake was so small that the family didn’t even notice, Shiloh leaped after the snake to protect little Bryson.

According to Bryson’s father Bryan, “Shiloh jumped up and took off after him. He lunged right towards the baby and at the baby’s feet, and when he did, he kind of jerked back.”  The parents must’ve thought that the dog was going straight for their son for a moment!

In a move reminiscent of The Bodyguard, Shiloh jumped in between the boy and the snake and was bitten on the neck.  “As furry as he is, and he has so much fur around his neck, you could visibly see the swelling,” recounted Bryan.

Luckily, Shiloh was able to recover with some antibiotics and pain medicine. Still, things might not have turned out so well if the snake had succeeded in attacking his intended prey.  Thank God he didn’t!  That is why there are good friends, and there are best friends.  In this case, Shiloh truly proved himself as a true best friend.
